Operating Systems DesignIn preparation for the expansion an longevity of our organization DINFOS including the need to revamp and upgrade our OS. Having a good understanding of how hardware and software intertwine to create the complete system is important to make sure we’re headed in the right direction. We are excited to see what’s to surface in the future as new technologies emerge and how they will provide us with an increased productivity.Project OutlineDINFOS, is a medium sized school house for military students in AIT. Our enrollment status varies but is at any given time from 600 students and about 450in staff members. We offer each student and their own IPAD for schoolwork. Faculty is equipped with IPADs and some have Windows laptops but the main workstations are Windows desktops. In a select few classrooms utilize MacOS devices. Our data center currently uses several versions of Windows Server. VMWare 6.7 is the powering our virtual servers which get updated as needed with the assurance its data and applications are kept secure as well as ensuring compatibility with newer version. This project is focusing on upgrading our leftover Windows desktop machines to Windows 10 aiming to provide consistency as a whole with the other PCs already deployed in our environment. We are eagerly looking to migrate our application imprint from being local to cloudbased we have various kinds of software we have to take into consideration before a big upgrade. Our biggest piece of software we have to worry about is called ActivInspire which is used for the4 | P a g e
smart whiteboards in the classrooms. ActivInspire needs to be working in order for the upgrade to be labeled a success and being that the current version of ActivInspire is currently compatible with Windows 10 there shouldn’t be any issues. Our goal is to migrate other software over to the cloud as they become available. Current our hardware systems runs on Windows 10, but we still have to investigate all hardware for the upgrade. Each desktop is equipped with an Intel Core i5 which has a quad core processor that can handle just about anything the staff is working on daily.
