American Justice System: Bryan StevensonExplain the social issue presented, what makes it a pressing social issue (Rubic) and why it is significant to you personally (Rubic)The social issue presented and what makes it a social issue is because of the incarceration rate of black Americans is disproportionate compared to white Americans. The sentencing guidelines are such that they focus more on punishment then rehabilitation and because I believe it perpetuates further criminality and becomes a catch 22.Explain the point of view presented in the video.Bryan Stevenson advocates for criminal justice reform because the criminal justice system is biastowards African Americans and emphasizes punishment rather than rehabilitation. He speaks about the death penalty and should we arbitrarily execute people for their crimes or do people deserve to die because of their crimes.Explain a different perspective on the same issue that you found through your research. (Rubic)A different perspective on this issue is referenced from an interview given about Bill Cosby in 2002. Dr. Alvin Poussaint, psychiatrist at Harvard Medical School interpreted Mr. Crosby’s comments that he felt that more attention to things like education and good parenting are important. He voiced that we have a generation of anti-education and anti-intellectualism in blacks because it’s considered being “white” This sets them up for failure in dropping out of highschool and going to jail. He felt that African American parents needed to take more of a responsibility in raising and educating their children. (Tough talk, 2004)Explain your own current perspective on the issue after having explored the topicMy perspective is that socioeconomic status does not make the person. We are so much more then our wealth or lack of dictates. Blacks may have to try a little harder due to their parents’ decisions in their child raising techniques, but whites also have the same issues. I would agree with Mr. Cosby’s view
