Alissa Colaruotolo Mrs. Egan AP Literature & Composition, period 3 24 April 2017 Eliot: P826-831 #1-11 1. The Hollow men have straw for brains, lacking intelligence, and therefore, lacking the ability to fully understand their condition. They can only yell single self-pitying phrases to express dissatisfaction. In a penny for the Old Guy epigraph, Eliot compares the Hollow Men with the character Kurtz from Heart of Darkness, and the English traitor Guy Fawkes. By doing so, Eliot is able to demonstrate that they are dead souls. 2. The Hollow Men is really about people who are spiritually dead though physically alive. Their heads are stuffed with straw which is also "dry". Dryness refers to deadness, emptiness, barrenness. Additionally, dryness is a symbol for lack of life, as water is essential for all life. The mood of lines 5- 10 is bleak, depressing, and empty. Eliot is claiming that things that are dry or dried are neither relevant nor meaningful. Although these things are not literally dead, the words are empty and hollow because they have not found spirituality, God, or eternal life. In many cases, the desire for spirituality is referred to as thirst, and God is referred to as flowing water. Water is a necessity to life, like how Eliot claims that God is necessary to a rich and meaningful life. The dryness is an extended metaphor to show what man is like without God, which is metaphorically dead and eventually physically dead. The hollow men's voices have nothing to say that matters. The hollow men may seem like living men just dried grass swaying in the wind seems alive at first glance but without the water, the true source of life which is God, the grass ceases to grow.
