2PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF NURSING PROFESSIONALSNurses are not only counted as trusted caregiver at the bedside, but also known as frontline activists and leader of health care movement. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) released theirFuture of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Healthreport in 2010. This report made nursing profession and the entire healthcare industry were challenged.In this report the committee released the four-key message: First key message is about nurses’ practice. The IOM report about first key stated that"advanced practice registered nurses should be able to practice to the full extent of their education and training” (2010). This content arises from not only regulatory restriction to expand the scope of practice, but also professional resistance to expand roles of nurses in order to work up to their full education and regulation. This key message “included a long list of proposed legislative initiatives for Congress, state legislatures, the Federal Trade Commission, the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and the Office of Personnel Management.” (Williams & Wilkins, 2012). Second key message stated that "Nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression"(2010). This key content the recommendation to increase the number of nurses with high level of education, and through this key IOM wants to make BSN as entry level requirement for nursing profession.
