Moderate Listening Activity 3.1 Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusik , movement 1 and Smetana’s The Moldau are two very different pieces of music. Both have contrasting melodic contours; in The Moldaui , the melody is very smooth which means that the piece is conjunct. However, in Eine kleine Nachtmusik , the melody is quite jagged, with very sharp seeming notes that create a disjunct contour. Also, in The Moldau , there are fewer pauses in the music and, thus, longer phrases when it is compared to Eine kleine Nachtmusik . Mozart makes Eine kleine Nachtmusik memorable by beginning the song with numerous cadences that bring the listener into the piece of music. On top of this, Mozart repeats rhythmic ideas and phrases in the beginning of the piece. On the other hand, Smetana makes The Moldau memorable by keeping an underlying melody going on in the background and building
