APUSH The Planting of English America American Pageant 1500-1733 England’s Imperial Settings: - Protestant Reformation: - King Henry VIII broke away from the Roman Catholic Church in the 1530s - Catholics battled Protestants for decades→ religious balance was messed up - Protestant Elizabeth: ascended the throne in 1558 - Ireland: ruled by English powers went against the Protestants and the Queen. They sought help from the Spanish but aid never came. The Queen won them over and placed protestant land-lords to regulate them. Elizabeth Energizes England: - England began to travel to promote Protestantism and seiza the treasures of the Spanish - Attack on Spain: - Sir Francis Drake: circled around the world and defeated the Spanish in 1580. Supported by the Queen. - Newfoundland: was the first attempt to colonize but ended when Sir Humphrey Gilbert died. - Sir Walter Relagin: organized an expedition to North Carolina Roanoke Island, named after Queen Virgin. This colony mysteriously vanishes. - Invincible Armada: Phillip II of Spain tries to invade England but England fights back. Spanish ships storm back.
