AFFORDABLE CARE ACT PLUSES AND MINUSES 2 Affordable Care Act pluses and minuses The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act(ACA) along with the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act are a combination of laws that were signed by President Obama on March 23, 2010 and is referred to as Obamacare (Health Care.gov, n.d.). The intent of the law was to improve the general health of the nation by providing health care coverage, which would include health prevention, treatment and health education, to more of the population of the United States by making healthcare more affordable for everyone while maintaining cost effectiveness (HHS.gov, 2015). A portion of the package provided for funding to be directed toward creating better educated health care providers and creating a larger primary care provider workforce (HHS.gov, 2015). The effect of these laws has been to build the most comprehensive package of healthcare reform to date (HHS.gov, 2015). The ACA, and the healthcare reforms it has put into place, have had an impact on community and public health as well as all levels of health care. Many of the effects have been positive but there are still flaws and deficits in the system, many of which can be attributed to the current divisive, obstructive federal legislative body (Sargeant, 2013).
