Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations was founded in 1945 to lead international efforts to defeat hunger. Serving both developed and developing countries, FAO acts as a neutral forum where all nations meet as equals to negotiate agreements and debate policy. FAO is also a source of knowledge and information for developing countries and countries in transition to modernize and improve agriculture, forestry and fisheries practices and ensure good nutrition.

FAO Activities The activities include: Food laws, including food additives regulations, food standards, food hygiene, etc. Trade in agricultural products Conservation and stockpiling of foodstuffs and agricultural raw materials Seeds, feedstuffs, fertilizers, pesticides and veterinary products Trade agreements

World Health Organization (WHO) The World Health Organization is the United Nations specialized agency for health, established in 1948. Its headquarters are in Geneva, Switzerland. WHO's objective, as set out in its Constitution, is the attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of health, defined as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease. WHO is governed by 193 Member States through the World Health Assembly with representatives from WHO's Member States. The main tasks of the World Health Assembly are to approve the WHO program and budget and to decide major policy questions.

Joint FAO / WHO Food Standards Program FAO and WHO established the Codex Alimentarius Commission to develop international food standards, guidelines and related texts such as codes of practice under the Joint FAO/WHO Food Standards Program . The program is aimed at: Protecting the health of consumers and ensuring fair practices in the food trade Promoting coordination of all food standards work undertaken by international governmental and non-governmental organizations Determining priorities and initiating and guiding the preparation of draft standards through and with the aid of appropriate organizations Finalizing standards and, after acceptance by governments, publishing them in a Codex Alimentarius either as regional or worldwide standards, together with international standards already finalized by other bodies wherever this is practicable Amending published standards, after appropriate survey in the light of developments
