Naznin Miah NFS 2220 11/29/18 Lab 3: Lipid Metabolism Introduction/Background: A lipid is a biomolecule that is soluble in nonpolar solvents. Lipids are organic molecules with long hydrocarbon chains. They are hydrophobic small molecules. The amphiphilic nature of some lipids allows them to form structures such as vesicles, micelles or membranes in an aqueous environment. They are hydrophobic (insoluble in water) because they are nonpolar (made of C-C and C-H non-covalent bonds) and are soluble in non-polar organic solvents (other oils, hexane). Triglycerides are a type of fat (lipid) found in your blood. When you eat, your body converts any calories it doesn't need to use right away into triglycerides. The triglycerides are stored in your fat cells (adipocytes). Later, hormones release triglycerides for energy between meals. Methods/Materials: The materials used in this lab 5 Eppendorf tubes, water, saline, TAG reagent, TAG standard, unknown solution, vortex, cuvette, pipet, water bath, and spectrometer. We prepped 1/5 Eppendorf tubes as a blank with 1000 microliter of water. For 2/5 Eppendorf tubes we put 1000

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
