Mayoral government (weak and strong mayors) B. Single Purpose Local Governments 1. School Districts 2. Special Districts II. Metropolitan Areas A. Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) B. Suburban Growth - Started after WWII, 1950’s, job space began to fall apart (industries moved to suburban areas) - Overlapping of responsibility, divided among suburbs - Inter-governmental issues - DETROIT (highly segregated, crime, poor infrastructure, 1 st city to lose 1 million in population) - Poor public policy 1. Racial discrimination in labor markets 2. Industrial discrimination 3. Residential discrimination - Suburbs grew on their own and incorporated their own governments and cities. Wanted nothing to do with prior major cities.
