Post-midterm Essay Topics What was the role of the 2 nd party system in putting off a conflict over slavery? How did the demise of the 2 nd party system contribute to a split in the country over slavery? o Split over slavery o Separated into Whigs and Democrats Whigs: Clay, Webster, Calhoun, Tyler, middle class, northeast residents, business elites, federalists, elite planters in the south Democrats: Catholics, Irish, Germans, Jackson, Van Buren, farmers, debtors, artisans from NE, white south o Both parties “protected” against special interests Whigs: reform movements (abolition, women’s rights, temperance), “Whig” from glorious revolution, Anti-Jacksonian Democrats: liberal with personal morality issues, low tariffs, states rights, slavery, Indian removal o Each party offered clear-cut choices on issues by appealing to cultural groups o Occurred in the Mid-1800’s o Delayed the issue of slavery: divided based on socioeconomic status and not north/south, this was all altered when the westward expansion was factored in “Spirit of ‘76”: Which side- North or South- in the Civil War had the best claim to be upholding the legacy of the founders? o Who is upholding the founding positions? South: direct relation to the Revolution, went back to the American Declaration
