SWEDISH MASSAGE REVIEW EFFLEURAGE Gliding stroke.  Moves horizontally across the body’s surface.  Can be done deeply or  lightly, quickly or slowly.  Assists in returning blood to the heart when performed on the  limbs.  Increases circulation. Helps to move cellular waste back into the bloodstream.  Also used to spread oil or cream and to evaluate the tissue for knots or adhesions.  Useful  in transitioning from one area of the body to the next or to soothe an area after extended  deep work.  Hands should be soft and relaxed, conforming to the contours of the  receiver’s body. EFFLEURAGE STROKES   hand over hand, thumb over thumb, diagonal strokes on the back, figure 8, two hands  simultaneous along the spine, pulling up along the sides/ over the shoulder, spreading  strokes on the arms, legs, hands or feet; open fist PETRISSAGE Kneading.  May be performed with one hand or two.  Deep or Light.  Not to be done too  quickly.  Should have a rhythmic feel.  Pumps toxins out of the muscles.  Increases
