THE IMPACT OF STRESS ON ACADEMIC SUCCESS IN COLLEGE STUDENTSStress, defined by Oxford dictionary, is the pressure state of mind in which the body reacts todemanding circumstances, either physically or mentally (“Stress”, 2015, para.1). In recentyears, stress has become one of the most controversy issues among college students. Studentshave to deal with numerous problems, trying to familiarize themselves with a new chapter inlife, as well as to maintain their academic progress, relationships, environment, careerdirection, and financial problems. Although it is indisputable that stress poses both positiveand negative impacts upon students in the progress of becoming academically successful, andthe merits are various, to illustrate, stress may perform as an additional source of motivationtowards students. However, the inability to cope with pressure may result in variousunpredictable circumstances. There have been two main causes known to attribute to stress:health factors and social factors. It usually, stems from the difficulties caused by manyproblems in daily life of adolescents and over time, grows into stress. This essay will dissectthe reasons leading to stress and their impacts on the academic success of college students.There are many factors contributing to why so many college students are stressed, and themost prevalent being academic records. This issue affects all students. For individuals withsufficient prior ones, the pressure of having to maintain their consistency is immense, as onelow score may degrade their ranking, resulting in their lowing overall progress as well astheir personal self-esteem. The same amount of stress among students with former academichardships comes in different terms. They always feel nervous when having to face exams,presentations or anything related to their scores, they also think that these bad grades are anindication of their ability to succeed in the future, making them ashamed of themselves.Moreover, everyone is under the pressure to make their families proud and they feel like theyare always being compared to everyone else. It can be said that academic records can affectstudents’ level of stress strongly.
THE IMPACT OF STRESS ON ACADEMIC SUCCESS IN COLLEGE STUDENTSAnother cause of tension among students is social influences. For individuals studying awayfrom home, homesickness is one common concern. It is easy for students to get lonely henceform the thoughts of having no one to rely on, especially in an unfamiliar new place. There isalso a problem of roommates and housemates with differing lifestyles and this makes newfriendships more difficult, adding even more to their existing stress. In conclusion, socialfactors can have serious negative consequences on students’ mental health.
