Objective: The objective is to determine the specific heat of various solids using the methods of mixtures. Apparatus: Styrofoam cup or other calorimeter, digital thermometer, steam generator, balance, specific specimens. Procedure: Select a solid specimen of mass and unknown specific heat capacity. Hang the specimen inside the steam generator by a string for about 7 minutes so that the specimen reaches the temperature of the steam. While the specimen is heating, add enough water to the Styrofoam cup to just barely cover the specimen. Use cold water, approximately 5 C below room temperature. Right before removing the specimen from the steam generator, measure the temperature of the water in the cup. Then, as quickly as safety allows, take out the specimen, dab it dry with a paper towel, and insert in the cup. Measure the equilibrium temperature.
