VUCA ENVIRONMENT 2 Strategic Human Resources in a VUCA environment The current corporate environment is rapidly changing due to numerous factors such as regulatory framework, technology, demographic factors, or due to the impact of economic or political changes in the both domestic and international environment. Today companies and employees are struggling to handle such issue beyond their control. In modern times, organizations are not able to predict the uncertainties they might face in the future. This has led to a situation where long-term planning is taking a back seat and evolution of short and immediate to midterm strategies is capturing the mindshare in every board meeting. The question comes that as HR leader, how do you ethically adapt to this ever-changing the new and unpredictable environment or which is now commonly known as the VUCA time. This essay tries to answer this question by looking at how a VUCA environment affects HR practitioners and how they can embrace the new environment ethically. Effects of VUCA Environment on The HR Professionals The term VUCA emerged in the late 20th century and was used by the American military to refer to a Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous period after the in the cold war time (BennettG & Lemoine, 2014). The word was afterward used by the corporate sector to describe the business environment that was swiftly changing. This was underlined by globalization, technological advancement, Institutional changes, demographic changes, changing customer needs, interference with contemporary business models, among others. VUCA is used to define the current era and is mainly found in the context of change processes, and thus, the term has become established in management training. One thing is clear, anyone who would like to cope with the dynamics of the VUCA world should, as a manager, have one personality trait above all: flexibility! In the VUCA atmosphere, managing change will be a continuous process, and HR professionals will have to invest in it to build their capabilities to adapt to this changing environment. Continuous learning, upgrading of skill sets will be the key to overcome the challenges. HR leaders are required to develop training programs at every level, which will help in building the desired skillsets in its people. Besides, they need to establish swift learning and development approach to raise the speed up the rate at which workers can learn and tackle unanticipated problems.
