Teaching Children Wellness Concepts: Developmentally Appropriate Practices Infants (Birth – 18 Months) Babies aged birth to 18 months learn foremost through sensory exploration and movement (aka sensorimotor period). Provide safe opportunities for babies to freely explore using their sensory and motor skills like placing toys within reach of the infant’s hands and feet Introducing healthful routines such as washing the baby’s hands before eating. Toddlers and Preschoolers ( 16 Months – 5 Years) Use their intuitive curiosity and motivation and method for learning. Provide opportunity for children to explore their ideas by manipulating materials such as real and toy foods and utensils. Early Elementary Age Children (5 to 8) Learn best when they can explore ideas in real and tangible ways Offer individualized activities like having children keep a diary of all foods they have eaten. Identify healthful alternatives to less healthy activities, such as snacking on apples and nut butter instead of potato chips
