ATM: Regulates the rate at which cells grow and divide The ATM gene encodes for a protein that is primarily located in the nucleus of the cell and is recruited and activated by DNA double strand breaks. DNA Double strand breaks Once activated the ATM protein phosphorylates several key proteins that initiate activation of the DNA damage checkpoint, leading to cell cycle arrest, DNA repair or apoptosis. Many of the targets of ATM, are themselves tumor suppressors This is why individuals who possess mutated non-functional versions of the ATM protein develop a conditions called ataxia- telangiectasia and an increased susceptibility to developing cancer The Central Dogma:

ATM: Regulates the rate at which cells grow and divide atm/atm individuals do not produce full sized, functional ATM protein. These individuals have less protection against DNA damage via DNA damage checkpoints, cell cycle arrest, DNA repair or apoptosis. The ATM Locus The Locus : Refers to the physical location of a gene. The combination of numbers and letters provide a gene’s chromosomal “address”. Band patterns on stained chromosomes provide reference points.
