Chain 1 Jesslyn Chain Ms. Mumford Pre-AP ENG II/1st Hr. 19 September 2017 Literacy to People Today Literacy is, at its core, the comprehension of and ability to read and write. However, for some it is also an opportunity. A hobby, necessity, an escape. For me, it is invaluable for all of these reasons, and because of its importance in day-to-day life. In the modern world, literacy is required to communicate, to learn, and to reach new heights in our careers and relationships. In my case, this difference in viewpoints makes me wonder if it is not the definition that changes with each person, but the meaning. Lamont Carey can be a good example of a personal meaning for literacy. In his poem, No Child Left Behind, he explains his struggle with illiteracy. We find insecurity in his words, when he tells us he would deflect embarrassment by being funny. For him it is a secret struggle, something he hides in shame. His words are laced in desperation and, at times, bitterness. He tells us about how the blame is passed from teacher to parent to himself. Carey also mentions the
