On the one hand, this is a real fear: despite all our advances in science and medicine, humankind remains vulnerable to the rapid spread of contagious illness. As much as human beings need to connect through touch and nearness, proximity to another human being also raises the spectre of illness and death. Yet whether they appear as plague, tuberculosis, smallpox or AIDS, contagions in literature often mask other fears. Contagion expresses anxieties about colonialism and the spread of religious fervour. It expresses fears for the future and about the unknown during a period of social upheaval. Contagion sometimes stands in for xenophobia and jingoism. It can also stand in for the fear of female sexual freedom. Contagion acts as a literary metaphor that can be appropriated into social and political discourses about poverty, class, race and sexuality. This class will cover a wide range of voices from an extensive range of life experiences, in what should be a challenging and wide-ranging conversation about the more ambiguous agendas behind “contagion” texts. What might fictions of contagion teach us about ourselves and our social and political structures? The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
