PERSONALITY AND FERTILITY 2 Part I. (A) What is known about this topic is fertility rates have been declining for many decades in developing countries. Social influences and individual preferences affect ones decisions to have children. One s personality traits like stable affective, behavioral, and cognitive dispositions are linked with different aspects of fertility behavior. High extraversion was associated with earlier transition to parenthood and having a greater number of children. High openness to experience and high neuroticism did the opposite. (B) The theories that have been identified are fertility behavior have stressed that social in- fluences as well as individual preferences influence individual s decision to have children. Also, social and individual factors may have interaction effects meaning that some people are more sensitive to culture and social circumstances. (C) The controversies that exist regarding this topic are that fertility decisions have become progressively based on the individual person as opposed to social pressures. (D) The author s purpose of conducting this study is to see if there is an association between personality and fertility.
