Movie Summary: Girl Interupted This movie is based on a book written by Susanna Kaysen. The movie stars Winona Ryder as Sussanna Kaysen, a woman searching for the meaning of her life and the struggles she goes through to find it in a mental hospital. Along the way she befriends Lisa Rowe (Angelina Jolie), a woman who is an obsessive, manipulative woman with obvious antisocial personality disorder. They develop a deep and dangerous relationship. Ultimately it was breaking free from Lisa that Susanna finally finds her way and copes with her diagnoses of borderline personality The movie begins with Susanna Kaysen asking a series of reflective questions which include asking why someone would steal when they have the cash to pay for it in their pocket. Oddly enough, the actress, Winona Ryder herself has had bouts with kelptomania, truth follows fiction. The movie is based on the biographical book by the writer Susanna Kaysen, a confused young girl , who is later diagnosed with borderline personality. Fiction following truth. When we meet Susanna, she is teenager, just graduated from high school, who is sent agrees to enter a residential psychiatric facility .Although she plans to stay only a few weeks for some rest. Kaysen stays for for nearly two years. The doctor who her committeed to her only interviewed Kaysen for a short time, and hardly waited for Kaysen to respond. Kaysen tells the story nonchronologically of the people and experiences she encounters at the mental instution. Among the patients admitted to her ward, Kaysen describes Polly, a kind patient with self-inflicted burns to her face and body. Lisa, another patient, entertains Kaysen with her escape attempts and exaggerated contempt for hospital authorities. Kaysen’s roommate, Georgina, struggles to maintain a

relationship with Wade, a violent and unstable boyfriend from another ward, who tells the girls seemingly outlandish stories about his father’s exploits with the CIA. The twin obsessions of roasted chicken and laxatives make a newly arrived patient named Daisy the object of much speculation. Daisy leaves the hospital, but commit suicide later on in the movie. One day a boyfriend visits Kaysen. He offers to take her away to Canada, but she says no, convinced that she should complete her treatment. Kaysen admits to a suicide attempt with an aspirin overdose in high school. Most of the movie centers around the milieu of the hospital. The hospital’s strict rules dictate patients’ daily routines. Nurses perform “checks,” periodic visual assessments of a patient’s activities and according to a schedule that corresponds to the severity of the patient’s illness. The staff confiscates any possessions that might cause injury, Field trips outside the hospital walls are rare and require patient-to-nurse accompaniment. The dominant figure throughout the milieu is Lisa Rowe, who is a dangerous influence and the others, especially Susanna, leading them on several escape from the institution.
