Human Beauty There is a difference between aesthetic beauty in art and in humans Being disinterested in human beauty doesn't seem to work - we have desires, ie. sexual desires, in the way We see human beauty as positive, spiritual, divine ie. being in love - we also see it as dangerous, destructive, demonic Human beauty is a great motivator for both men and women Women seem to possess it (fight over it), men seem to possess women with it Beauty and its pursuit seems to be caught up with its drives ie. bribery, lust for power/ status It allows us to tap into our darker drives Beauty leads to irrational decisions Beauty sparks irrational behaviour and discord to human affairs - competition (Ruben - goddesses fight over whos the most beautiful) Beauty Ideals (in society) What is the beauty ideal in our culture? How do we know? We know from social media, art, magazines There are changes in how female form is portrayed Peter-Paul Ruben portrays women as bigger than the usual painter, same with the males We could ask people directly what their beliefs are of beauty instead of trying to infer what society deems as beautiful There seems to be a mismatch between what type of body women think men find ideal vs. what they actually find ideal Ideals are general claims People agree on which faces are better faster than what body types are better General agreement on all genders and ages General agreement on different ethnic backgrounds Sloping facial profile are less attractive Symmetry is perceived as beautiful Averageness is beautiful - if you combine faces together people find the mashed photo beautiful vs. individuals faces Youthfulness is beautiful - big eyes, high brows, small nose Waist to hip ratio in women - optimal is 0.7 WHR

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
