Introduction The properties of Portland cement concrete in hardened state depicts the overall strength of the structural member throughout the lifespan of the structure in terms of its durability and stability and resistance to loading. To determine the properties of Portland cement concrete in hardened state, following tests in accordance with ASTM standards were performed in the lab: 1. Compressive strength test of cylindrical concrete specimen (ASTM C39) 2. Flexural strength test of concrete (ASTM C78) 3. Splitting tensile strength test on cylindrical concrete specimen (ASTM C496) 4. Ultrasonic pulse velocity test on concrete specimen (ASTM C597) Flexural and compressive strength tests were performed in the lab to determine the load bearing capability of concrete specimen. It gives an idea about the behavior of concrete specimen under structural loading conditions. The splitting tensile strength test was performed in the lab to determine the tensile strength of concrete specimen which is usually a fraction of its compressive strength. Having an idea about the compressive and tensile strength gives an idea about the loading resistance of concrete specimen under tensile and compressive structural loading and its properties can be determined based upon these tests. Ultrasonic pulse velocity test was performed in the laboratory in order to determine the quality and overall strength of concrete specimen in non-destructive manner. All these tests contributed in determination of properties of Portland cement concrete in hardened state. PART I: Compressive Strength of Cylindrical Concrete Specimens (ASTM C39) Objectives of Experiment The primary objective of this experiment was to determine the compressive strength of the cylindrical concrete specimen which were created in the laboratory. This experiment also aimed to determine the properties of hardened concrete based on the compressive strength.
