Hypoxia is when the body is deprived of vital oxygen to the point where major organs of the body begin to develop cell damage. Examples: Suffocation, high altitudes, hyperventilation, toxic gasses, lung abnormalities such as pneumonia 2. Define atrophy, hypertrophy, and hyperplasia. Atrophy: Decrease/shrinkage in cellular size Hypertrophy: Increase in size of cells (organ) – Same number of cells, size increases Hyperplasia: Increase in number of cells - cells stay the same size, increase but increase in number 3. What are the subatomic particles that comprise an atom? What are the charges on each particle? Protons (+) Neutrons (no net charge) Electrons (-) 4. What is apoptosis? Cell death that occurs as a normal and controlled part of an organism 5. What is the purpose of the coronary blood vessels of the heart? Supply oxygenated blood to the heart muscles
