Safe 256 Lesson 1 1. Risk involves a combination of two factors. Describe those factors. The two factors involved in risk are the probability and severity of an occurrence. A matrix can quickly be developed to determine the probability and severity of an occurrence. In some cases, a number is given to represent the factors. Oregon OSHA uses a probability, and severity matrix and assigns high, medium, and low for probability, and severe, serious, and minor for severity. Oregon OSHA method is simple and will allow employers to determine their risk quickly. Page 49 2. What are the four steps of risk assessment? The four steps are Hazard Identification, Dose- Response Assessment, Exposure Assessment, and Risk Characterization. Breaking each step down, with hazard identification, one must examine whether the hazard/s has the potential to cause harm to health if so under what circumstance. With a dose-response assessment, one looks at the relationship between exposure and effects. The final two-step is exposure assessment,
