REFLECTIVE PERSONAL CASE STUDY Reflective Personal Case Study Every individual will go through developmental stages as they age, although everyone goes through them differently. I will be looking at my life in relation to the eight stages of human development covered in this course, as well as reflecting in-depth at my own life experiences. I will look at Erik Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development along with Albert Bandura’s Social Learning Theory. These are theories of psychological and cognitive development that I feel have impacted my development and shaped me into the person I am today. The environment I grew up in shaped attitude, beliefs, behaviors, and how I interact with others. My childhood was very different from the other kids I knew growing up. What I did not know at the time was that my complicated childhood would later lead me to unruly teenage years and a problematic early adulthood. It is important look at factors such as family, gender and cultural aspects and how they have influenced my life and affected my development. Albert Bandura’s Social Learning Theory Albert Bandura’s Social Learning Theory emphasizes the importance of social learning. It is often referred to as the ‘bridge’ between behaviorism and the cognitive approach. Observational learning is most commonly seen in childhood when a child copies, imitates, or models a behavior they observe from a role model. Observational learning is a natural and indirect process of learning that can start as early as infancy. The process of observing and imitating a role model is very powerful process that can teach both positive and negative behaviors. Albert Bandura’s Social Learning Theory relates a great a lot to my life. During my childhood, I looked up to my mom and I would consider her my biggest influence. My mom did

REFLECTIVE PERSONAL CASE STUDY a good job raising me and teaching me to do right. The only problem was that she struggled with addiction. This is where I can relate to the social learning theory. A common phrase used in parenting is “Do as I say, not as I do”. The social learning theory says that children are more likely to do what they see rather than what they are told. My mom always told me to always say no to drugs and alcohol while watching her abuse drugs and alcohol. One study shows that one’s attitude towards substances and their use as well as the outcome expectancies seem to be the factors that determine the decision whether to engage into use or not. On the other hand, one’s perception of his/her abilities regarding the implementation of a behavior and more specifically the sense of self-efficacy to refuse substance use, constitutes a robust protective factor for the individual (Giovazolias, & Themeli, 2014). I do believe that by observing my mom using drugs
