WIND SAILING RESEARCH PAPER 2 Wind Sailing Research Paper The origins of wind sailing are rather incoherent due to its ancient beginnings. For example, in “History of Wind” it is clearly stated that “ Since ancient times, people have harnessed the wind's energy. Over 5,000 years ago, the ancient Egyptians used wind to sail ships on the Nile River.”, however, “Who discovered Wind Energy?” clearly states a different location and time period: “Earliest evidence of sail technology comes from the Cucuteni-Trypillian culture in Eastern Europe at around the 6th millennium BCE .”(History of Wind, n.d.) and ( Who Discovered Wind Energy, n.d.). Although the dates and locations of the definite origin of wind sailing vary depending on the article, most sources do not acknowledge a specific figure as a discoverer. According to the article “Renewable Energy”, Wind-powered sailing is considered a renewable alternative to using boat engines.(Renewable Energy, n.d.) Operating boat engines purely from batteries emits pollutants that can gravely damage the environment as well as our health, but wind sailing, on the other hand, does not emit pollutant and is very suitable for transportation. (Sailors for seas, July 17, 2017) Despite the invention of the steam engine, wind sailing is not obsolete, in fact, it’s making a comeback, as mentioned in “Are Traditional Sailboats the Future of Trade?”: ” The centuries-old transport is now enjoying a revival among cargo traders, with a new breed of merchant ships returning to wind power in an effort to promote environmentally sustainable trade.” The trend of using traditional wind sailing for shipping cargo is growing as seen in examples like El Lago Coffee Company and Sail Transport Company, and it is likely to keep increasing because of concerns about environmental sustainability. WIND SAILING RESEARCH PAPER 3 Even though wind sailing does not relate to chemistry, the wind blowing on the sail and the movement of the keel involve physics. The article “Physics of sailing” mentions various information on the topic, but it is centered on the idea that wind moves a sailboat in the direction that it is blowing. (The Physics of Sailing, n.d.) “Physics of Sailing” also argues that
