WORK IN MODERN AMERICA 2 Work in Modern America The economy of America has changed in many ways since the 19 th century. It has been shaped by immigration, globalization, democracy, and corporate power. A lot of men and women come to America, facing many barriers and even death to attain success and sadly, that doesn’t always happen. However, the reality is that hard work and commitment are not the sole factors essential to achieve success in the today’s American society. America's economy has evolved to become more knowledge-based and depends heavily on skills, experience and education. Although, American culture has come to rely on overseas laborers to work in jobs that are low- paying and high labor. The American economy also relies on global manufacturers to produce products. This paper examines aspects of the American service/knowledge-based economy; seeing the impacts that immigration, globalization, politics and corporate power have on the market. Service/Knowledge-Based Economy In the 19th century, the American economy was centered on production. Henry Ford and the moving assembly line allowed for the mass production of cars. Fordism was not just a production system but a regime of accumulation, or national growth regime, characterized by mass production combined with institutions supporting mass consumption, including a system of collective bargaining which generalized the class compromise of relatively high and growing wages in return for labor peace. (Vidal, 2015). With the mass production of automobiles, advancements in expertise and skill became crucial to those working in assembly lines, in order to prevent accidents that could endanger lives. As technology advanced, it created significant changes in production, making more efficient work environments for workers. This changed the production aspect in America to require more of a service/knowledge-based economy.
