CGEO 793 – Week 9 Mount Dennis was known for its factories, especially Kodak. Recently the area has gained interest due to a lot of vacant land for gentrifies, and the fact that it is the last spot for the Eglington LRT project. Its location in the inner city is a plus for the developers/Gentrifiers. Gentrifiers now expanding to the inner suburbs. Racialized class project The author argues that not only class is involved in revitalization process, but that race is also involved: the wealthy are mostly white while low income are racialized groups. Racialized class projects highlight both the class and race impacts of revitalization. Racialized Class projects are defined by: 1. Eliminations of racialized people from redevelopment plans and visions 2. Organization of white privileged to manipulate the planning function 3. Stigmatization of commercial spaces serving low income racialized communities. These racialized groups open ethnic stores in the area that are now affected with revitalization, since the argument is that these stores bring the areas reputation down. Residents who utilize these stores would not benefit from the new high-class stores. Professor Williams the sense of superiority that white people have with people of colour. Whiteness study is concerned with how one can accept white ideology without being complicit in white supremacy. These are cultural social construction that space how we navigate within our space. People in Mount Dennis is related in the sense that white people are privy to plan the space because they know the best for racialized groups (who are not given an input). Mount Dennis is in the poorest riding in Ontario with most residents being of a minority groups; most stores owned by immigrants, intersection of class and race. Town hall meeting to fix Mount Dennis, involved high members of government, was planned to take place at the mount Dennis Legion that is very conservatives and that is against immigrates, Muslim women. Thus, many of the residents of the community are being prevented to attend. Efforts are currency being made to address legions policy with respect to head covering.
