These cells are called stem cells; they have the potential tobecome any type of cell. An organism starts out with cells that have no specific function.The stem cells go through the process called differentiation to have a specialized function (Sandner 2009). There are two important types of stem cells, adult stem cells, and embryonic stem cells. Adult stem cells have limits to the number of cells they can become, which is also known as multipotent. Embryonic stem cells have the ability to become type of specialized cells. These types of stem cells come from an embryo or the blastocyst, which appears one week after fertilization (Sandner 2009). Scientists have made it possible to grow embryonic stem cells from human embryos (Britannica 2016). The stem cells go through cell division without having to differentiate. If they end up being extracted from a human embryo and be grown in a laboratory. With these embryonic stem cells, I believe that that they will come with many positive outcomes. I strongly believe they are important and should be studied because stem cells can also help develop and improve the study of gene therapy. Scientists also will be able to learnabout genetics and unique human traits to modify the way that we treat diseases. Lastly,they can help cure a large amount of diseases that are known to man. That is why I strongly think stem cell reproductive and therapeutic procedures are beneficial.First off, stem cell research can help with the development with gene therapy. Gene therapy is the transplantation that repairs genes that have a mutation or genetic disease(Britannica 2016). The first way stem cell affect gene therapy is by how embryonic stem cells can be shaped genetically to create the therapeutic gene (Zwaka 2006). This genecan be activated after the stem cell has become specialized. Scientists have tried experiment on skin cells from a mouse. The cells were used to form cellular therapy thatrestored the immune function in a mouse. The previous genetic mutation was fixed by
the genetic modification stem cell and gene therapy combination (Zwaka 2006). Many
