THEORY PROJECT CRITIQUE 2 Theory Critique Project Nursing in the new millennium has advanced a great deal due to the many influences on nursing theories. There have been numerous theorists dating as far back as Nightingale, who has put in the groundwork for nursing. Not only has nursing became more demanding, but it also incorporates technological advances and has taken a scholarly reputation now than at the beginning of the profession. Nursing has been so ever-changing and will continue to keep transforming bettering the nursing profession. One of the most talked-about theorists to date is Dorothea Orem. Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory has been pivotal to the role of nursing across all clinical settings and nursing educational programs. Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory emphasizes the needs of the patient and the patient's environment (Meleis, 2018). Dissimilar to other theories of its time which were more patient-centered, Orem’s approach is more goal-oriented. The critique of this theory will be in association with Chinn and Kramer’s model, which entails a description of the theory and critical reflection to assist self- reflective reasoning. Description of Theory Orem’s theory of self-care deficits describes when healthcare providers should step in to help clients preserve independence (Meleis, 2018). She became extensively recognized amongst her peers and provided expert advice for several institutions throughout her career. Orem’s theory delivers a whole structure for nursing practice. It incorporates into multiple areas of nursing. Orem (1997) describes the Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory as an unconfined theory for clinical practice. Unconfined methods of nursing are suitable among many practice healthcare settings where individuals require nursing care. Comprised of three inter-related approaches of self-care

This theory made it possible for nursing to transition from just being a job to becoming a profession and becoming the most widely utilized in the field of nursing (Fawcett, 2001). Purpose The motive of the Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory is to furnish the practice of nursing with a widespread foundation. This theory frames when nursing care is necessary. The focus is not only about individual self-care, but along with multi-patient facets. Furthermore, the purpose of her philosophy, directed towards the notion of the patient following through with activities of self-care. Therefore, encouraging autonomy in the part of the client and leading attention to the patient’s capability to execute self-care is a client-centered approach (Meleis, 2018).
