Lab 120N: Conservation of Angular Momentum Gabriela Majcher Group 5 Experiment Date: 04/10/18 Submission Date: 04/24/18 Physics 102A-004 Professor Linghua Zhu Introduction Objective: The purpose of this laboratory is to prove that angular momentum is conserved in inelastic collisions. Background: Angular momentum is conserved when there is no external net torque acting on the system as a whole. When a ring is dropped on a rotation motion disk, there is no torque on the system. This allows to prove that angular momentum did in fact get conserved. There is no net torque on the system because the torque on the ring is equal and opposite to the torque on the disk. Procedure (pg 58 – 59) The setup of the experiment is shown through the Figure to the right. Once everything is ready accordingly, measure the mass and radius of the ring and disk. Spin the disk either clockwise or counterclockwise and collect data once you press “record.” Hold the ring about 2-3 millimeters above the center of the disk. Start rotating the disk in the positive direction and start obtaining data by clicking “record.” Once it runs for 2-3 seconds, drop the ring onto the spinning disk.

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
