What forms of government can the people participate in? - Democracy, Republic What forms of government can the people not participate in? - Oligarchy, Monarchy, Authoritarian, Totalitarian, Anarchy. What are the five characteristics of democracy? (Essay Question)- Majority rule, Equality, Liberty, Necessity of Compromise, Individual Worth. What are the three conditions of democracy? - Opportunity, Educated Society, and Moral Responsibility. What is a Direct Democracy? - A government where the people directly affect the government's policies and actions through gatherings. What is an Indirect Democracy? - The people elect their peers to operate the government on their behalf. Then the people hold frequent elections to keep them accountable. What is an Unitary Government? - Governmental power resides in the central government; but, unlike a dictatorship, this government receives all its power from the people. Once established, the central government creates local units to help administer government. What is a Confederate Government? - In a confederate government, regional governments retain supremacy and delegate few tasks to the national government. The powers held by the national government are exercised only by the states’ permission. What is a Federal Government? - Divides a nation’s power among national, regional, and local governments. In one instance, local government might exert more influence, while in another the national government might be more influential. A constitution rules the nation’s various levels of government, delegating powers to each.
