Amber Rooms- Competency 2 Please return your answers to these review questions: 1. How does the heart of an older adult respond to exercise? Increases thickening of the heart walls, especially the left ventricle. With this enlarging and thickening of the heart it decreases the ventricle flexibility and therefore, increases the overall weight of the heart decline in the number of myocardial cells. Generally, these changes contribute to reduced diastolic function. 2. Describe how changes in kidney function can contribute to ADRs (adverse drug reactions). The number of glomeruli, which are bundles of capillaries in the kidneys, decrease in size and membrane thickness. Thus, causing renal blood flow to decline and the GFR to be further compromised. This becomes significant because elimination of waste and toxins from the kidneys can cause an accumulation of harmful substances such as buildup of medications and then leading to such adverse drug reactions. 3. Explain “start low and go slow.” Measuring creatinine clearance is not always accurate in adjusting doses because the creatinine production rate is variable, elders have decreased muscle mass, and other factors weigh in. The equation can lead to underdosing in a healthy older adult and overdosing in
