Part B- El Ni o vs. La Ni a There is another important ENSO variation called La Ni a, or "little girl." This condition is when surface waters in the eastern and central Pacific cool below normal temperatures (Figure B1). La Ni a is less common and generally weaker than El Ni o. La Ni a is characterized by enhanced easterly trade winds; strong upwelling and cool sea-surface temperatures off Peru; and a cloudy, rainy western Pacific that causes flooding in the Philippines and eastern Australia.
