35 Desiree O'Nan Garcia Soc 361_VA Abstract 2 - Émile Durkheim September 16, 2019 Central Thesis: Social integrations are determined by social facts and or anomies', and when that fact/anomie is marked by group deduction, solidarity within a society and excessive individualism become the empirical reasons for suicide increase in a much larger social force issue. This individualism will eventually lead to social structurlization of either mechanical solidarity or organic solidarity that dramatically influences a common moral value system. An overarching assertion underlying all of the readings is that social facts and anomies characterize independence. -4 BELOW YOU WILL FIND A CENTRAL THESIS FOR EACH OF THE THREE EXCERPTS INCLUDED IN THE CHAPTER. SOMETIMES FORMULATING A SEPARATE THESIS FOR EACH EXCERPT IS EASIER THAN ATTEMPTING TO IDENTIFY A SINGLE ONE, AND I’LL ALWAYS ACCEPT THIS. CENTRAL THESIS ON SOCIAL FACTS: SOCIAL FACTS ARE SOCIAL FORCES LARGER THAN ANY SINGLE INDIVIDUAL, AND SOCIAL FACTS ARE TAKEN FOR GRANTED ASSUMPTIONS/KNOWLEDGE OF THAT WHICH IS ACCEPTABLE/APPROPRIATE IN SOCIETY. THEY ARE PRESENT IN THE FORM OF FORCES LIKE CUSTOMS, NORMS, RULES, AND LAWS, AND THEY GUIDE BEHAVIOR. CENTRAL THESIS ON SUICIDE READING: SOCIETIES REGULATE THE BEHAVIORS OF THEIR MEMBERS, MEANING THAT SOCIETY EXERTS NECESSARY SOCIAL CONTROL OVER INDIVIDUALS. WITH A LACK OF SOCIAL CONTROL, INDIVIDUALISTIC ACTS (E.G. SUICIDE) RESULT. CENTRAL THESIS ON RELIGION: RELIGION EXERTS POWERFUL SOCIAL CONTROL. DURKHEIM ARGUES THAT RELIGION IS A WAY FOR SOCIETAL MEMBERS TO RELATE TO FORCES (including social forces, like stratification structures and natural forces, like diseases and storms) THAT ARE BEYOND AN INDIVIDUAL’S CONTROL. RELIGION IS A REFLECTION OF SOCIETAL NORMS, VALUES AND BELIEFS – NOT VICE VERSA. Answer to Thought Questions:

These can also be joined by transcendence through objects/structures. These are useful in sociology as understanding social groups deduction into egoism and an "un-integration" of an individual from social life. Suicidogenic causes in egoism are found from Durkheim's important discovery that
