This analysis requires careful reading, awareness of the text’s organization and rhetorical strategies, critical consideration of the text’s sources, and, of course, a response to the text’s argument (or thesis). When we respond to a thesis, we need to consider two things: whether the thesis itself is well constructed and offers a reasonable argument, and whether the thesis is proven by the text. For this assignment, you will write an essay about a scholarly article. In this essay, you will analyze and evaluate the thesis and argumentation presented in the article, and you will also assess the sources used by the article’s author: you will consider what kinds of sources the author uses and you will assess how the author uses those sources. Throughout your essay, you will offer an overall, academic judgment about whether the article can persuade its intended/target audience.
