Chapter 6 – Reading Rhetorically: The Writer as a Strong Reader 6.1 Understanding rhetorical reading To read rhetorically means to note how audience, purpose, occasion, and genre shape a text Readers read rhetorically when they are aware of the text’s intended effect on the reader Strong rhetorical readers analyze how the parts of a text work together persuasively, and they think critically about whether to accede to or challenge the text’s intentions Reasons why texts may be hard to understand: o Unfamiliar rhetorical context o Unfamiliar genre o Unfamiliar vocabulary o Lack of background knowledge Reading with the grain: seeing the world through the author’s perspective, opening oneself to the author’s argument, and applying the text’s insight to new contexts, and connect its ideas to your own experiences and personal knowledge; empathetic listening Reading against the grain: resist the reading by questioning its points, raising doubts, analyzing the limits of its perspective, or even refuting argument 6.2 Understanding summary writing Summary: condensed version of a text that extracts and presents main ideas in a way that does justice to the author’s intensions
