Describe the importance of statistics to science. Randomize experiments for bias. If something is uncertain or certain. Define pop, sample, randomness o Population – all objects (measurements) of a particular kind in some designed subset of the universe. o Sample – Data collected from the subset of the population used to make inferences about the population as a whole. o Randomness – Each possible object in a population has equal probability to being sample Variables a. Discrete - whole numbers (age - births) b. Continues: temperature – any possible # within a range (decimals) - height (positive, negative values, or decimal values) c. Rank “Ordinal” – male hyena – difference cannot be measured on scale with consistent units – food preference d. Attributes “Nominal” – male/female, alive/dead – cannot be expressed on a quantitatively or by rank - Response vs predictor variable (explanatory) - Dependent vs independent.
