Nervous System Meninges - Pia Mater which becomes filum terminale. - Arachnoid with subarachnoid space with CSF. - Dura Mater which is surrounded by epidural fat. Gross Spinal Anatomy: -Conus Medullaris as adult cord tapers to point (L2 vertbrae) - Filum Terminale fibruous attachment of Pia mater to coccyx - Cauda equine: nerve roots resembling a horse’s wispy tail. - Cervical & Lumbar enlargements in which cord thickens at the Brachial & Lumbosacral plexi owing to innervation of extremities. Spinal morphology: The inner gray mass is shaped in an “H” and outer white ascending (sensory) and descending (motor) tracts housed in columns or funiculi. -Central Canal in the center of the cord within gray commissure. -Anterior Horn with motor nerve cells which exit the spine via a ventral root . -Posterior Horn which receives sensory fibers from the peripheral sensory via the dorsal root . Note Dorsal Root Ganglia -Lateral Horn (from segments T1 thru L2) containing the motor nuclei for the sympathetic nervous system. -Posterior Columns – Sensory tracts for fine touch, vibration & proprioception. -Lateral Funiculi – Lateral Corticospinal (Motor) Lateral Spinothalamic (Pain & Temp.) -Anterior Funiculi – Ant. Spinothalamic (Crude pressure & touch).
