Immune System Immune System: system that protects the body from disease Pathogen: a disease causing agent. ex. bacteria, virus, fungi, protozoan, and parasites. Infectious diease: a disease caused by pathogens. Nonspecific defenses: don’t tager specific pathogens. Specific defenses : involve an immune response. Nonspecific defense: A. first line of defense): Skin - good barrier -gets help from oil and swear which makes the skin acidic. Mucus: - covers internal surfaces of digestive system. - sticky fluid that block and traps pathogens. Swear, tears, and saliva : contain enzymes which break down the cell walls of bacteria. Stomach: contains acids and enzymes to kill pathogens. B. second line of defense): Inflamontary response: increased blood flow and plus produced WBC. Temperature response: body temperature increases by several degrees to stop bacterial growth. Protein: circulate in the blood and attack pathogens. Interfeon: a protein released by cells to fight viral infection.
