The goal of Daniel B. Thorp's "Taverns and Communities" was to provide readers with information on taverns in the 17th century in Rowan County, North Carolina and to show the way the community of different social classes and ethnicities socially reacted to them. Taverns during the 17 th century were used as a borderland which is "a meeting place of peoples where geographical and cultural borders are not clearly defined,” as the book describes (Foner 36). Within the article, the author, Thorp, described many details of the taverns that made them so appealing to the people in North Carolina at this time. He discussed the blueprints of each tavern, the type of furniture within them, the kind of alcohol was served and the type that was served most to each type of people that came in such as the ethnicity, social class, and the gender inequality, and many other important factors that should be included to learn about the details of each tavern (Thorp 2). I think articles of this nature are important, so people can imagine how much society has changed from the 17th century to now. More specifically, one could see social views, gender roles, and the things that people thought were important during this time. I feel
