Exam 1 Review: Chapter 1: How does a discipline differ from a profession? A discipline is a unique area of study but a profession is an area of practice. How did WWII affect communication sciences and disorders? Since many people were suffering from speech and hearing disorders at the end of the war it was a catalyst or growth in the field. How can you differentiate between a communication disorder and a communication difference? An individual with a communication disorder would have a communication structure or function that is diminished to a certain degree. Someone with a communication difference may have communication abilities that differ from those usually encountered in the mainstream culture but is no obvious impairment. What are the differences between certification and licensure? Licensure involves fulfilling a set of minimum criteria for practicing as a professional in a field in a certain state. Certification involves standards developed by professional organizations or state agencies. Vocab- developmental disorder- disorders you are born with certification- standards are developed and administered by professional organizations or state agencies licensure-fully credentialed SLP and audiologist as defined an individual state communication difference- communication abilities that differ from normal discipline- area of study profession- area of practice evidence-based practice - to describe how decisions that professionals make about clinical service delivery are guided by high level clinical research organic disorder- disorder that has a physical cause impairment - any loss or abnormality of psychological, physiological, or anatomic structure or function disability- reduced competence in meeting daily living needs handicap- social, educational, occupational disadvantage that results from an impairment or disability functional disorder-physical cause for a disorder cannot be found Chapter 2 What is the difference between language production and language comprehension? Language content is the component of language that relate to meaning The linguistic systems involved are semantics (representation of an object, idea, feeling, or event) and lexicon (mental dictionary of words). Language form refers to the structure of language and involves: phonology (study of sounds we use to make words), morphology (internal organization or words), and syntax (linguistic conventions for organizing word order. Language use concerns the goals of language and the means by which we choose between alternative combination of words and sentences. This involves pragmatics (helps us decide what to say to whom, how to say it, and when to say it).
