Case Description Freescale Semiconductor Cybernetics Inc. is the leader of a growing and highly competitive market segment in the mobile device industry. The company has pioneered a revolutionary mobile device architecture called Mobile Extreme Convergence (MXC). Their main competitor on this market segment is Cybernetics Inc. They suspect that Cybernetics has been trying to steal by any means the core Intellectual Property (IP) underlying the MXC architecture. Such IP is protected by Freescale by keeping it closely as trade secret. Employees of the company were instructed not to have any direct communications with key competitors such as Cybernetics and others. The company’s head office is located in a secured facility, with a single entry/exit gate, protected 24 hours by security guards with surveillance cameras. Furthermore, the security team of Freescale secretly checks on a regular basis the content of a random sample of incoming/outgoing emails. During one of these routine checks, an email sent to Cybernetics was intercepted. The intercepted email sent by Ms. Emma Hancock, the Assistant of Dr. Eli Drucker, the Founder and CEO of Freescale, raised suspicion that she might be providing company sensitive material to Cybernetics. Dr. Boss confronted Ms. Hancock with his suspicions, who denied vehemently. Unconvinced, Dr. Boss decided to fire her with immediate effect for data theft. Ms. Hancock was then escorted immediately out of the premises, leaving behind some personal items. In anticipation of possible lawsuit, the company decided to collect and analyze evidence supporting their case. One of the items left behind by Ms. Hancock was a USB key.

Forensic Details To further ensure integrity and validity of evidence analysis, a dedicated forensic workstation was used to perform the forensic analysis. The forensic workstation consists of a Linux machine as the main host which contains a VirtualBox Windows Vista operating system. VirtualBox a software package which allows users the capability of running multiple operating systems in one machine simultaneously. By using VirtualBox has greater functionality throughout the analysis, verification, and examination of the digital evidence given that the investigator can readily access more than one operating system concurrently. The analysis, identification and verification of the image was performed using a Windows Vista computer which consists of the following: Operating System: Microsoft Windows Vista Hard Drive Capacity: 5 GB Processor: Pentium 4 2.40 GHz Memory: 256 MB Tools: Autopsy Forensic Browser, FTK, Quickstego The integrity of the image was verified using Autopsy Forensic to analyze the image and begin evidence collection using the Md5 and SHA1 that was provided in the USB key.

In order for the USB key work when I enter to analyze in Autopsy or FTK I had to convert the DatabreachUSB.001 into an image as I tried several time and autopsy rejects it, converted to an image as DatabreachUSB001.img Forensic Details

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
