TELENCEPHALON Largest division of the human brain Mediates the most complex brain functions Contains cerebral cortex, limbic system, and the basal ganglia Functions Initiates voluntary movement Interprets sensory input Mediates complex cognitive functions

DIVISIONS OF THE CEREBRAL CORTEX Two hemispheres Connected by tracts called cerebral commissures Corpus Collosum is the largest Four Lobes Not functional units; But you can get a general idea of their function Frontal – motor function, cognitive functions such as planning evaluating outcomes and patterns of behavior Parietal – touch sensation, perceiving location of objects and ourselves, and directing attention Temporal – hearing, language, memory, and is involved in complex visual patterns Occipital – visual input

CEREBRAL CORTEX Many convolutions Increase surface area without increasing volume Terms Fissures: large grooves in the cortex Largest is longitudinal fissure Sulci: smaller grooves in the cortex Gyri: ridges between sulci and fissures

THE LIMBIC SYSTEM Surrounds the thalamus Involved in motivation, emotion, learning, and memory. Two main regions of interest Amygdala (emotion esp. fear) Hippocampus (memory; spatial memory)
