Fetal Testing: Ultra Sound: A prenatal ultrasound is a non-invasive procedure that uses sound waves to create a visual image of the infant, placenta and uterus during various stages of the pregnancy. As you can see, an ultrasonic wand is guided across the patient's abdomen identifying fetal structures, and any potential issues that may affect well-being of the infant. Uses of Ultrasound Transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasound, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, is used for a wide variety of normal and abnormal conditions. Assess fetal growth Determination of gestational age Placenta placement Fetal heartbeat and anatomy Fetal tone, movements, and breathing Amniotic fluid index Ultra sound is a very simple procedure. Ultra sound information is very limited, meaning we have very few things we can tell from an ultra sound. We can tell what position baby is in, where placenta is, babies’ heart beat (chambers of heart pounding away). Sometimes can get educated guess on gestational age by measurement of bone. Make sure lady is not flat on back, you want her to lay flat so wedge with pillow to left side to get heaviness off of blood vessels has a better reading. Which of the following is NOT diagnosed by abdominal ultrasound during the prenatal period? A. Fetal heartbeat B. Fetal presentation C. Maternal Diabetes D. Volume of amniotic fluid Answer: C. 1

Biophysical Profile (BPP): A biophysical profile (BPP) consists of both an ultrasound exam and a non-stress test which together test 5 components of fetal health. BPP Ultrasound exam: The ultrasound exam portion of the BPP checks four different indicators: 1. Fetal tone 2. Fetal breathing 3. Fetal movements 4. Amniotic fluid volume (index) 5. BPP Non stress test (NST) – helps tell oxygenation of baby with reactivity of baby. The non-stress test (NST) portion of the BPP involves placing of a fetal monitor on the mother's abdomen and interpreting the fetal heart rate in response to fetal movements (NST measures fetal heart rate). Each of the 5 BPP parameters are assigned a score from 0 to 2 with a maximum total BPP score of 10. Biophysical profile is a lot like an ultra sound but more sophisticated version telling us so much more. 5 components to it. Helps to determine if baby needs to be delivered based on results or it can be delivered. Each components the most you can get is a 2. Ideally patient should go to 10.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
