On December 10, 1948, the UN General Assembly accepted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Although we had these same rights before this declaration, this was a universal declaration, meaning that these rights were accepted and granted to all human beings, regardless of the country they came from. Of these 30 rights, we have been asked to choose three that we think are the most important to defend. I think that the most important of these rights are (1) the Right to Equality, (2) Freedom from slavery and (3) Freedom of Belief and Religion. What is the Right to Equality? This right dictates that everyone be treated equally under the law. If one is assured due process, then all are assured due process. I can see this right being foundational in the fight against lynching, discrimination, and segregation. In the era of Jim Crow, blacks especially but also other races as well, were discriminated against. They were unable to use the same bathroom or water fountain; they would have to ride in a separate car on the train or use a separate entrance from white people. There
