Compare and Contrast Essay Nick Vozza 1/14/14 3rd hour When reading the “The Old Grandfather and His Little Grandson” by Leo Tolstoy and “The Wise Old Woman” by Yoshiko Uchida, some similarities and differences in the two stories stood out in the two stories. One similarity is that both stories portray the universal theme respect your elders. “The Old Grandfather and His Little Grandson” shows the universal theme when the father asks the son what he is making and the son says, “I’m making a wooden bucket. When you and mamma get old, I’ll feed you out of this wooden dish.” This portrays the universal theme because it says that although elders cannot do everything that younger people can do, they should still be respected; it’s not their fault if age has changed their bodies. In the story “The Wise Old Woman” by Yoshiko Uchida, the universal theme can be found when the young lord tells the elders, who are 71 years old, to leave the village and go to the mountains to die.
