Clark’s Journal Entries September 24th,1804 Today, Coulter killed 4 elk. We also prepared some clothes and a few medals for the chief of the Teton band of Sioux. Later that day as we passed the island, Coulter ran up the bank and told us that the Sioux had taken his horse. Soon after that we saw five Indians on the bank, who wanted to come aboard our ship. We had told them that we were friends and wished to continue our journey. Then the men that had stolen our horses were sent by the great chief and told us that we should not speak to them again. Later, I met the chief who was called, Buffalow Medison. The last thing I told him was that we would call the grand chief in council tomorrow. -Clark- September 25th, 1804 Today, at around 11 o'clock the first and second chief arrived. Lewis had delivered a speech to them and had also given a medal to the grand chief. After the speech was over I went to a pirogue with the chiefs. What I wanted to do with them was to reconcile with them and leave them on the shore. Once I landed three of their young men ceased the cable of the pirogue, one soldier hugged the mass.
