Dear Congressman, This letter is in response to the “Conscience and Religious Freedom Division” and the potential impact that it will have on our healthcare community. This new rule is meant to protect healthcare providers from performing certain services and treatments based on their religious beliefs. According to OCR Director Roger Severino “This rule ensures that healthcare entities and professionals won’t be bullied out of the health care field because they decline to participate in actions that violate their conscience,” (HHS, 2018). I am against this rule and I explain why and offer some recommendations on how the provider and patient rights can be balance. Potential Impact Due to the vagueness of this new rule, healthcare providers have the right to refuse transgender surgery and to treat a transgender with other illnesses or injuries, based on their religious or philosophical belief.
